The name is Kat and I loooove to cook, bake, saute, roast, grill, create and share. That’s why I started this blog. As if my life isn’t busy enough with an awesome job as a music director at a college radio station called CJSW in Calgary, being a wedding DJ with my BFF, keeping up with the current science trends for my other blog, tutoring chillin’s in maths and playing in an awesome monophonic synth band that makes really dark music (with a happy grin on, of course). But, I heard a calling. One day, I thought, “there must be a potluck food blog out there.” After a reasonably thorough search my hands were still empty and my mouth was wide with shock, disbelief and outrage. I knew I didn’t have the time to start yet another blog but after several nights of sleep tossing and turning I realized this ghost would not stop haunting me until I fired up WordPress and started writing. So here I am.
This blog really just aims to provide some awesome recipes that are easy to bring to potlucks, nothing else. I don’t consider myself a chef by any means but I love to experiment in the kitchen and have been doing so for about 14 years now, at least. As such, many of the recipes that you’ll find on this site have been taken from other resources, which I link to or reference where I can. I have tried every recipe I post and usually tried it on my test subjects as well. So, at least a few people have given me positive feedback and no one has died. Sure, sometimes I change things because I think I’m pro like that… but really it probably makes no difference and it’s all personal taste in the end. But, what I think makes Oh My Potluck different is that I try to cater the instructions to potlucks, giving you instructions on how to store or carry the food. Admittedly, I don’t go to a bazillion potlucks so (get ready for disappointment here) some of the recipes have just been for my BFF and I. The great thing is that potluck recipes are also great store and take to work recipes.
In that vein I’ve also indicated when a recipe suits anyone with dietary restrictions. I myself am a vegetarian and have been to potlucks where my dish is the only one I can have but I want people to know that there’s a lot of delicious things out there that are great tasting that almost anyone can eat. So, if you know you’re going to a potluck where someone swells up like a balloon if they have a drop of milk or maybe your brother in law has to watch his sodium now and you have to make something for the family’s thanksgiving dinner then just find the tag and hopefully you can find something that’ll work. In time.
As you can probably tell from my me-paragraph up there I love music. I love it to death. That’s why I insist on cranking the stereo when I’m in the kitchen, dancing around and getting some really good whisk action happening (or whatever utensil happens to be on hand and necessary at the time). For each recipe I share some music that you can throw on. It’s not going to have any really popular bands (although, I will admit to singing “Paparazzi” really loud in the shower from time to time) and sometimes it may be pretty out there. I recommend giving it a listen though because I really want to introduce people to things they’ve never heard before. Maybe it will give you some inspiration for a playlist at your potluck. Just maybe I’ll make a difference. Maybe.
I’d like to thank my Aunt Christine who have taken on the duty of editing my writing. She’s been editing for me since I was in elementary school and apparently I still make a lot of mistakes so she stepped in to help me look just a bit more pro. I have such great family (she’s actually a professional editor of writing, so if you need her to edit your books, email me and I’ll put you in touch).
If you’ve made it this far, well, good for you. I don’t know why I’m so blabby. You probably just glossed over all those words and skipped down here anyway so I’ll sum it up: I’m busy. I couldn’t find a potluck blog. I like making food. I like sharing food. I like music. You should too. I hope this blog is useful for making a potluck ready dish.
Nice to meet you, Kat! Thanks so much for joining the Potluck! Sounds like a perfect fit!

Thanks for the visit to my site Kat… Glad you liked it. Thought I would take a look around – very nice. Clean crisp site. Lots of good information as well. I’ll make sure I check back often.

And I love the names you have given your dishes… hilarious.
Thanks! I find puns so funny but I’ve never had a reason to try doing many myself. This is a nice way to challenge myself… I’ve been coming up with some humdingers so stay tuned.
This is seriously one of the coolest blogs I have ever seen! I absolutely adore your illustrations and witticisms, and the recipes look amazing. Keep up the great work! 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and the absolutely blush-worthy compliment. I just got back from your blog and am going to make the Avocado Black Bean Lime Tostadas tonight for dinner! It’s perfect for a very hot day here in Calgary. Lots of loves.
They are awesome for a night when you need something quick and easy! You’ll have to let me know what you think once you’ve gobbled them up. 🙂
Hi Kat! I love your site and was wondering where you get your clip art? ARe those your drawings? They’re great!
Yes, I draw them all myself. I’m glad you like them. I’m no pro artist by any means but I like to practice.
The you bring a welcome panache to the potluck scene. This a terrifically well conceived and perfectly executed website. Thank you for sharing your recipes with us.
Oh! Well, thank you very much. Speaking of chili, I made this TO DIE FOR bourbon bbq bean thing that I’ll be posting soon. (I promise a better title when it actually gets posted… it’s not really chili but it’s in the family). Thanks for stopping by.
I have a thing for cooking with bourbon and I totally cannot wait to see your recipe. Thank you.
