Sweet Dreams Are Made of Cheese Loaf

red lobster breadIf you’ve ever been to Red Lobster, you know how amazing the cheese biscuits are.

This is Red Lobster’s Cheese Biscuit recipe done in a loaf pan.

Honestly, I haven’t been to Red Lobster in many years, but I’ve never forgotten the melt-in-your mouth biscuits. Taking a nibble of this bread transported me into that past and made the memories of treasure chests and popcorn shrimp wash over me.

While I have a lack of Red Lobster stories to tell beyond that, I can report that I was recently in Vancouver and stopped by the Vancouver Aquarium. They have so many amazing jelly fish, a beautiful tiger shark, a couple of adorable otters and tanks and tanks of other amazing creatures. DSC_0016

I was lucky enough to catch some whiprays eating their fishy lunch. They had to push the fish-bits up against the glass in order to nibble, which was pretty much the best view one could ask for. I’m also fairly certain one of the whipray was sticking its tongue out at me… But I’m no expert on fish habits.

The song I chose today is about aquariums. It’s a humorous and poignant video about how animals might feel in an aquarium. The Uncluded’s debut album Hokey Fright was one of my favourites from 2013. While “The Aquarium” is not my favourite track, it gives you an idea of what they’re about. Kimya Dawson is from the indie rock group The Moldy Peaches and Aesop Rock has at least half a dozen albums under his belt and is currently on the notable independent hip-hop label, Rhymesayers. Enjoy the fishy tales…

Sweet Dreams Are Made of Cheese Loaf

(Recipe compliments of Yooper Pasty)

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon white pepper
  • 4 ounces cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 3/4 cups sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons of butter, melted
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  1. Heat oven to 350˚F (175˚C). Grease a 9”x5” loaf pan with oil. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cayenne pepper and white pepper. Carefully stir in the shredded cheese until they’re covered in flour mixture. This will help keep your cheese from sinking to the bottom of your loaf.
  2. In a different bowl, whisk together the milk, sour cream, butter and egg. Fold the wet mixture into the flour and cheese mixture. Stir until just combined (20 stirs at most). Spread the mixture into the loaf pan. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes and then remove from pan. Cool for another 60 minutes before slicing and serving.
